Spinal stenosis occurs in elderly or middle aged people where spinal canal starts to narrow due to thickening of the ligaments and the bony structures surrounding the spinal cord. This compresses the spinal cord or the nerves leading to back pain and other problems.
Spine is made up of stack of alternately connected bones and shock-absorbing discs in between. It contains the spinal cord, extension of central nervous system that connects the brain to the rest of the body.
In majority of the cases stenosis results from age related degenerative arthritic changes. The spinal canal gets narrower with age. This leads to pressure on cord and nerves causing pain, tingling, or numbness or sciatica.
Surgery to relieve pain is needed in only few people with canal stenosis. With exercises pain can be controlled and may live normal lives.
The most common reason for spinal stenosis is arthritis characterised by thickening of the ligaments of the spine, and bone spurs.
Other causes include:
- Herniated discs
- Paget’s disease
Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis
- Leg weakness
- Difficulty in standing or walking
- Loss of bladder or bowel control- its a surgical emergency
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Computerized tomography (CT scan)
Non surgical options are preferred.
- Steroid injections
- Anesthetics for nerve block
- Physical Therapy
When the symptoms worsen in-spite of all medical measures, or symptoms are severe, or loss of control over bladder & bowel, surgical treatment must be considered.
